Last week The Sydney Hills farewelled former Shire President and Councillor Bernie Mullane. Bernie sadly passed away on Saturday 4 February 2012 and will be fondly remembered for his leadership and great contribution to our community.
Bernie Mullane was elected to Council in 1959 and has been referred to as ‘father of the Shire’ for his commitment and long-term reign as President from 1963 to 1983 and again from 1987 to 1991.
Bernie played a great part in helping to shape the dynamic, prosperous and vibrant community which we all enjoy today. We can see from his many achievements that Bernie Mullane was a man who dedicated himself to his community, to his family and to Local Government.
Bernie was known as a man who was generous and hard working with a determined fighting spirit and fierce negotiating skills.
His extensive experience in the field of Local Government was recognised when he was elected to the Executive of the Local Government Association of NSW in 1968. Bernie was then later awarded the M.B.E for services to Local Government in 1972, a tremendous achievement for a remarkable man.
Bernie’s commitment to his work extended beyond The Sydney Hills and he served as a member of the National Australia Day Committee and NSW Bicentennial Council.
Friends, family, leaders and community members will all fondly remember this great man. His wife Margaret Mullane and five children are well regarded in The Sydney Hills and are to be credited for the support that they have given Bernie over the years.
The many achievements of Bernie Mullane and the stamp that he left on the Sydney Hills will stand the test of time. He will not be forgotten and he will be sadly missed.
