A Current Affair helps Heidi Edwards

24 May, 2011 12:00 AM
IN an amazing story of compassion, a group of complete strangers worked together last week to help Canoelands resident Heidi Edwards and her family.

In May 2010, Mrs Edwards was driving along Old Northern Road to drop her children off at school when she suddenly saw a tree "from the corner of her eye" before it fell on her car.

The tree missed her children but pinned her in the car, crushing her spine and leaving her a quadriplegic.

After A Current Affair reporter Sarah Stewart told Mrs Edwards' story in March, the show's producers received calls from people wanting to donate their time and building materials for renovations to her house worth more than $200,000.

Tradesman and friends put their hands up to help with construction, and members of Galston Public School provided food for the workers during the seven-day project.

While all the work was being done, the unsuspecting Mrs Edwards stayed at a friend's house in Galston.

"They kept me in the dark and I had no idea what was being done," she said.

The work included a fenced pool, cabana with an outdoor kitchen and pizza oven, paths and ramps leading everywhere in the house, landscaping, a new bathroom and new floorboards.

It was revealed to Mrs Edwards on Sunday, May 15.

"I can't believe how much work they did in one week — it's fantastic," Mrs Edwards said.

"I was told the spirit and atmosphere on the property was just incredible.

"It makes me so happy to know that I can enjoy being with my kids and not just look at them."

The family was also given a van which can accommodate Mrs Edwards' wheelchair and a donation of storage units from IKEA.

In March the News reported on Mrs Edwards' struggle when her close friend Tanya Koorey, a committee member of the Heidi Edwards Family Fund, organised a fund-raising dinner.

The event was attended by 520 people and raised $127,000 towards the family's medical and ongoing living expenses.

"It was an amazing night and everyone who got involved helped make a difference in Heidi's family's life," Mrs Koorey said.

Team effort: Heidi Edwards was overwhelmed by the volunteers and the effort and time put into building their dream home, a project that was brought to a halt after her tragic accident a year ago. It's fantastic. This has been a huge help to my family and it makes us so much more at ease about our future, she said.
