Baulkham Hills MP, Wayne Merton, seen here as acting Speaker in the NSW Parliament recently, has called it quits after 22 years.
He will not contest the March 2011 election, triggering a big push by the Christian Right of the Liberal Party to wrest the seat from the moderates.
In a brief statement shortly after noon today, Mr Merton announced he would not be seeking preslection for the party when nominations close at 5pm.
``I have enjoyed 22 years of having the privilege of representing the people of the Baulkham Hills area. I am grateful for the wonderful support I have received from the residents during this period,'' he said.
He added: ``The Baulkham Hills area truly represents middle Australia based on family values and a strong work ethic. And I will continue to vigorously represent the people of the Baukham Hills electorate until the State election next March.''
Mr Merton said he would be leaving Parliament with the strong belief that under Barry O'Farrell's leadership, the Liberal/National parties had a good chance of returning to government.
``He will give the State the fresh start and solid leadership it urgently needs,'' he concluded.
