 Inquiry into our transport

Inquiry into our transport

30 Sep, 2008 04:00 AM
IS THE Hills up to scratch when it comes to public transport and infrastructure?

That's what residents are being asked, following an announcement that a parliamentary inquiry will be held into the woeful transport and infrastructure in north-west Sydney.

The inquiry, to be held in November, by the Legislative Council's General Purpose Standing Committee No.4, will be chaired by Jenny Gardiner.

It was initiated by outgoing mayor Sonya Phillips, who claimed that ``systematic discrimination'' has occurred in the north-west sector.

Residents can send in submissions before October 17.

``I urge you to grasp this opportunity and make a submission to put these critical issues before the inquiry and the State Government,'' Cr Phillips said.

The committee will discuss the requirements and plans for future road, rail and bus links, and planning and funding of the North-West Metro.

James Doyle, 19, of Castle Hill, is just one resident who agrees the public transport in the shire needs major improvements. He travels daily to Alexandria for work, either by bus or by car.

He said a combination of full buses, traffic and high bus fares was a concern.

``The Hills is a great place to live but it's so difficult to get anywhere in a hurry,'' Mr Doyle said. ``We are hamstrung by the lack of adequate public transport.

``I encourage everyone who travels to the city or Chatswood, Parramatta or Penrith for that matter, to go online and have their say.

``The residents of this shire desperately need a rail link to the city, Chatswood, Parramatta and beyond.''

Submissions can be made at baulkhamhills.nsw.gov.au (click on North-West Sydney Transport Inquiry and then on the link to the Parliament of NSW website). Or send to General Purpose Standing Committee No.4, Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney NSW 2000, fax 92303416 or email gpscsecretariat
