Kids patch up the planet

17 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM
TWENTY-ONE kindergarten pupils of Oakhill Drive Public School have taken a hands-on approach to learning and becoming motivated about sustainability. The pupils in KO have developed little green thumbs, tending and nurturing their flourishing vegetable patch at one end of their school oval.

Oakhill Drive Public School KO kindergarten teacher Inci Onay said the initiative came about after a Bunnings Dural information session on sustainability and the importance of recycling and reducing waste.

Mrs Onay said the hardware representatives planted a variety of vegetables, including celery, spinach, parsley, beetroot and carrots, for the children's vegetable patch.

``In class we'd been discussing where food comes from and I thought this was a way to get students motivated and also that you don't get everything from the supermarket,'' Mrs Onay said.

``The students have been really responsive. They help water the vegetable patch and when the vegies are ready they help pick them and then take some home.''

Some of the kindy pupils had been so enthusiastic they had ``gone home and started their own vegie patch how wonderful is that?''.
