AFTER thinking about volunteering in Peru for a number of years, Michael Brock of Baulkham Hills finally decided it was time to ``give it a go''.
``I saw something on Getaway years ago about working in Peru as a volunteer and I had wanted to do it ever since,'' Mr Brock said.
``I am retired and in good health so I thought this year was the perfect time.''
As part of the Peru's Challenge Program a program that allows travellers to experience Peru through tours while also volunteering in rural communities Mr Brock spent three months there from May to July this year.
He lived in Cuzco and worked in Pumamarca, a 45-minute drive to Cuzco.
``It really opened my eyes and I learned a lot while I was there,'' Mr Brock said.
``We take so many things for granted. In Pumamarca I saw two television sets, both in black and white, many homes have no electricity or running water and there's no buses and trains. But despite all this, the people are always happy and never look for hand-outs.''
During his stay, Mr Brock's duties included teaching English at Pumamarca School and helping out with the construction of a new kindergarten building.
``The greatest thing was meeting the people and being able to help the poor,'' he said. They were so grateful. We don't know how lucky we are here.''
