MALE depression is a subject close to the heart of Hornsby MP Matt Kean.
Mr Kean, who used to be the Young Liberals' vice-president. was shocked and saddened in May when his fellow Young Liberals' volunteer, Mike Powell, who was only 18, committed suicide.
The news hit Mr Kean hard. He had worked with Mike Powell during his election campaign.
In his maiden speech to parliament, Mr Kean called on the government to fund an annual $10 million advertising campaign for suicide prevention.
To further promote the cause, he is growing a mo for "Movember". He said he was proud to be a Movember ambassador and encouraged the men of Hornsby Shire to become ambassadors too.
"It's vital that we raise awareness and funds for mental health and prostate cancer," Mr Kean said. "I think important action must be taken to reduce the number of lives lost to suicide and prostate cancer. I would love to see many of my constituents donning moustaches throughout Movember to support this worthy cause."
