Orange Blossom Festival Events

The Orange Blossom Festival began in 1969 as a garden and footpath competition and has since grown to be one of Australia's largest community-run festivals, and is facilitated by the Hills Shire Council.

The 2009 Festival will be held from September 11 to 28 and will include events for all ages and interests including music, arts, food fairs, seminars, exhibitions, sporting and animal events, open days,

tours, senior and youth activities, fairs and fireworks.

SEPTEMBER 11

* Jobs and Apprenticeship Fair at Castle Hill RSL: Young job seekers can get career and training advice and assistance with resume writing.

Free, Castle Hill RSL Club, Castle Hill.

SEPTEMBER 11-13

* Bonsai: Learn about this ancient Japanese art of creating miniature trees.

Stroll through the bush and look at how trees mature, then using the same principals to create miniature trees in shallow pots.

There will also be a free clinic where you can bring in your own trees and seek help and advice.

* Opening of Baulkham Hills Art Society exhibition at Castle Grand: Prizes awarded in five competitive sections and all art work will be available for sale. 9am - 12 noon daily Cnr Pennant and Castle

SEPTEMBER 12

* Talent Quest at Rouse Hill Town Centre: Dancers, singers, musicians, singers, soloists, duos, trios and groups welcome. Heats begin at 10am and the final will be held on September 18 at Dural Country

Club.

*Excellence in Youth Awards: This program recognises academic, recreational and community achievements of local young people.

The Constance Lowe Hills Shire Youth Ambassador for 2009/2010 will be announced on the night.

* Wisemans Ferry Rural Fire Service field day: Become a fireman for the day and see exhibitions, demonstrations and a friendly competition between 20 brigades and the SES.

* Paws in the Park at Balcombe Heights Estate: For dogs and owners to meet with furry friends. There will be dog-washing, grooming, events like the Fancy Dress Parade and demonstrations by the

National Agility Competition, National Flyball Competition and more.

* Billy Cart Derby at Homeworld Kellyville: Prizes will be awarded for racing categories and excellence in cart construction. Registration is 10-11am and racing commences at 11.30am.

SEPTEMBER 24-27.

* The Castle Hill Art Society 41st Annual Art Awards and Sale: More than 400 works from adults and children.

SEPTEMBER 25

* Garden and Landscaping Competition: Have you got the best garden in the Shire or the most spectacular collection of pot plants on the balcony?

Held since 1959, this competition is how the Hills Shire earned its name as the Garden Shire.

Enter your back garden, tiny front garden, balcony or shared patch of land.

There are 18 categories and the Eric Mobbs Award for Excellence in Gardening will be awarded to the best of the best in the competition.

Winners will be announced at the Gala Presentation evening held from 6.30pm on Friday 30 October at the Castle Grand Community Centre.
