 Shire halts road change

Shire halts road change

02 Feb, 2010 10:17 AM
HORNSBY Mayor Nick Berman and his councillors have called a stop to road work on County Drive, Cherrybrook, after complaints from motorists.

Approved by the local traffic committee, work had begun to change County Drive from two lanes each way into one each way, with the introduction of a cycle lane.

This quickly sparked anger from residents concerned about increased traffic congestion.

Cr Berman said the council was also worried about the changes.

``We are also concerned about the impact on traffic with the lane being reduced to one,'' he said.

``We understand residents were not happy about the initial change and we feel there's a whole range of other options we can look at so we can get the best outcome for everyone.''

The changes were originally made in an attempt to reduce speeding along County Drive.

``At this stage, we need two lanes particularly at peak times,'' Cr Berman said.

``We need to have the traffic officers consult with the councillors and then see what other residents have to say.

``A lot of thought needs to be given to this problem.''

In an anonymous letter distributed to residents in County Drive, Cherrybrook, the changes were said to be a degradation of the local area .

It was a ``rash and stupid decision'' taken without consultation, the letter said.

County Drive Action Group spokesman Mark McCormick said a result needed to happen sooner rather than later.

``The council has halted work pending consultation.

``We don't know what that means, it could be a public meeting prior to a full council meeting in March,'' Mr McCormick said.

``We are calling for an extraordinary meeting ASAP, as the line markings and barriers have already been put in place. ``So in effect it's [one lane] already in place.''

``We also want to see no parking on County Drive during peak hour, as at the moment there is parking there.''

The action group has set up a website at countydrive.com for residents to post comments about the changes.

Resident Jonathan Weddell supported the lane change.

He said it reduced speeding and made the road much safer for everyone using it.

Calming down traffic is absolutely in line with the safety of all concerned. Safe access of County Drive for our school children, elderly and the residents of County Drive is not only the responsibility of our community as whole but also Hornsby Shire Council who they claim to provide safe environment for residents. Please refer to an article, "We're all for road safety" in hillsnesw.com by Mayor, Hornsby Shire Council. Due to increased number of accidents, Calming Down is also fully supported by RTA, NSW Police and Council. This work should start ASAP and to be completed for the safety of all. Who will take responsibility if there is a fatality, simply awaiting to happen.

This is just a stupid decision. And virtually no consultation! Do the Council traffic officers know how many thousands of local people they have impacted with this?

There is already a massive traffic problem in County Drive in peak hours due to a few parked cars. Encouraging residents and M2 bus commuters to park there all day has made it impossible.

County Drive is a major through-road and is classified not as a Local Road but as a Regional Road by the RTA. Have a look at the street directory - the design of the entire surrounding area depends upon County Drive to allow residents access to their own streets.

There is not a speeding problem at peak hours so the concept of "traffic calming" is patently silly. At other hours of the day and at weekends, parking is already allowed so there won't be any difference to road safety.

Maybe a speed camera should be installed if there is a genuine issue. In the past few years driving along County Drive I have several times narrowly missed hitting the door of a parked car flung open without warning. If a cyclist had been passing at the same time he would almost certainly have been killed.

County Drive is not the right road for a cycleway.

As both a driver and a cyclist I can't really see the sense in these calming measures. I would never use the cycleway in its present position. It should be next to the kerb or in a dedicated lane on the median.

The problem is the dangerous intersection at New Line Rd - where to from there? Putting a cycleway between parked cars and moving traffic is a death trap. It becomes a fraction of a second choice between hitting the car door at speed or swerving into the traffic. No thanks.

As a driver I can't see full time parking being the logical first response to a speed problem -maybe a speed camera?

Traffic calming seems a funny word to use to the peak hour drivers trying to get out of all the little side streets into County Drive and then on to Castle Hill or Pennant Hills or the M2 - how about Traffic Inflaming or Traffic Frustrating?

I am a resident of Cherrybrook since 1983 & have seen it grow in leaps & bounds. If continuing growth is displayed by ridiculous road changes, then it is time we as a community take action & get the changes overturned. Just think: *No resident consulted. *Country Dr (CD) is a major arterial rd servicing not just Cbrk but all surrounding suburbs. Already CD was struggling with congestion prior to changes, then they move to change it into only ONE lane - Now is this smart thinking? Where were the decision-makers when God was handing out brains??? *CD is NOT a cycleway & then they create one right next to the traffic lane - er hello?? *It is a fatality waiting to happen - impatient fools illegally use outside lane of CD to turn right & accel to exec. turn. Bad practice has not improved with changes but actually worsened. *I phd Police mths ago of this but no result......until a fatality happens - then who's left with the pain to deal with? *Our hard earned money, our council rate payments, would have gone to better use had they converted the rndabout into traffic lights rather than rob us of much needed lanes in County Drive. OVERTURN THE CHANGES - REPLC RNDABOUT W/TRAFFIC LTS!
