Skilled jobs show council's diversity

12 Aug, 2008 05:00 AM
BAULKHAM Hills Shire Council one of the top 10 shire employers, with an attrition rate of more than 15per cent a year offers many jobs.

Mayor Sonya Phillips last week launched council's first Careers and Employment Expo with varied local government work available.

``We had close to 200 people turn up interested in a career in local government, and we're now considering running the expo annually,'' she said. ``This was a great innovation for the council and proved to be a tremendous way to connect with the community in a meaningful way.''

The council has a 600 workers involving many professional and trade opportunities information technology, accounting, electronic drafting, planning, library services, child care, community workers, landscaping, bush care, engineering and plant operators.

``Locals should consider working with Baulkham Hills Shire Council rather than in the Sydney CBD because without adequate transport they're up for road tolls in excess of $4000 each year after paying tax if they have to drive to and from work.''

With an annual turnover of $20billion, councils Australia-wide employ 167,000 people, compared with 52,000 at Telstra and 62,000 combined working with the Commonwealth Bank and Westpac.
