War intent declared

09 Feb, 2010 02:04 PM
LAST Sunday's Hyundai A-league match at Parramatta Stadium between Sydney FC and Perth Glory signified the inner-city club's intent in the forthcoming code war of Western Sydney.

With the imminent arrival of a new Western Sydney A-league side in 2011 and the new AFL franchise in 2012, the Sky Blues are scrambling to hold on to their fan base in the western suburbs.

CEO Edwin Lugt said it was a ``challenge'' but that it was important to keep in touch one of Australia's most fertile breeding grounds for football.

``Thirty to 40 per cent of our members live in western Sydney,'' he said.

``Alex Brosque, Mark Bridge and Socceroos Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell, Mark Schwarzer all grew up here. It's up to us to use the next 18 months until the second Sydney team comes in to really build a relationship with the fans.''
