SYDNEY speedway competitor Mitch Dumesny, 21, of Nelson, is a smart sprintcar driver.
Dumesny, who recently took out the sprintcar season premiership at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway, is studying robotic and mechatronic engineering and has two years remaining before earning his degree.
Through exceptional exam results, where he has been consistently among the top 10 to 15 per cent, he has earned a scholarship with the International Scholar Laureate program in the US.
Through the scholarship Golden Key Group, Dumesny has been invited to the US to visit universities and attend seminars in Washington DC, Boston and New York City.
It's quite an honour for Dumesny who also is excelling in his chosen profession on the sporting field sprintcar racing.
The son of three times Australian Sprintcar Champion Max Dumesny, he recently completed his best-ever season in Sydney sprintcar racing after he took out the season point score title at Parramatta Raceway.
``It's great to win the championship,'' Dumesny said.
``I started off the season not even knowing if I was going to do the whole track championship series, so to win it was terrific.''
At the weekend Dumesny was back in action contesting the annual Easter Sprintcar Trail in Victoria and South Australia.
Dumesny has emerged as a star of Australian sprintcar racing.
Before sprintcars he was a NSW Kart Champion and Central Coast Speedway Kart Club Champion in the junior class and was junior titleholder in the NSW Speedway Kart Club. He has the best of both worlds a highly talented sprintcar driver and good university student. ``Just to have it [the university degree] behind me is a bonus because not many other people who race professionally have anything else,'' he said.
Dumesny's goal is to follow in his father's tyre tracks and race successfully in the US.
