THE Hills District Hornets Under 14 Girls team recently finished in fourth position at the Australian Under 14 Basketball Club Championships in Perth earlier this month.
It was a massive effort for The Hills team, who missed out on winning the bronze medal following a 40-31 loss to the Eastern Mavericks.
The young Hornets gave a glimpse of just how good their week could possibly be in the opening game of the tournament, stunning game favourites Bulleen Boomers with an upset 48-42 victory.
The remainder of the preliminary rounds had mixed results with the Hornets also defeating Logan Thunder and North Tasmania but losing to both Cockburn Cougars and Northern Territory North Geckos.
Those results secured the girls second spot in pool B and a match-up with the previously unbeaten Forrestville Eagles in the quarter finals.
The young Hornets once again showed their best form against the Eagles, edging out yet another game favourite and progressing to the final four.
A 45-52 defeat to Diamond Valley Eagles in the semi-finals relegated the Hornets to the bronze medal play-off against Eastern Mavericks.
The team: Aidan Taylor, Brittnee Sewell, Amy Renshaw, Natalie Mustapic, Danielle Mendoza, Danisha Lui, Taylor Johnston, Karina Giggins, Claudia Carnevale, Zoe Burke (captain) and Kathryn Atkins. Coach is Chriss Urwin, assistant coach is Kristy Sutcliffe and manager is Joanne Taylor.
Aidan Taylor finished the championships with a tally of 107 points to rank an impressive 10th place in the top point-scorers ranks, while Brittnee Sewell and Zoe Burke were the next best for the Hornets scoring 57 points a-piece.
