The Western Sydney Wanderers have failed to score a goal for the second week in a row following Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Wellington Phoenix.
The road trip was never going to be easy for the Wanderers, and it was made harder in the 22nd minute, when Jeremy Brockie struck a surprise looping goal from the sideline.
Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic was left red-faced by the goal after it swung in windy conditions and dipped under his diving body into the empty net.
The goal seemed to rattle the Wanderers, with Wellington strike duo Paul Ifill and Stein Huysegems creating plenty of scoring opportunities.
Coach Tony Popovic was then infuriated with match referee Matt Gillett after he waved away two dubious challenges in the penalty area.
Chances were at a premium for the Wanderers who missed a late opportunity to draw level when Shinji Ono’s shot at goal cannoned into his teammate’s back.
Wellington held on to take the three points and move up to fifth place on the competition ladder.
The Wanderers meanwhile slip back to eighth with a tricky test at home next round to Brisbane Roar.
