Council wants to rename Showground station 'The Sydney Hills'

The Hills Council has requested that the North West Rail Link’s proposed Showground station be named The Sydney Hills station.

Castle Hill and Hills District Agricultural society president said he was disappointed by the request.

‘‘The showground is the major thing at that location — it just makes sense to call it after the showground,’’ Mr Gooch said.

The show society recently succeeded in negotiating with the state government to move the station south-east to reduce construction impacts and preserve the showground for future generations.

In the state government’s second environmental impact statement it proposed calling the station Showground station after a suggestion from the society.

‘‘It’s probably one of the only station’s in NSW that would be named after a showground and recognises the unique nature of our area,’’ Mr Gooch said.

Councillors unanimously agreed to request renaming it The Sydney Hills station, in its submission on the North West Rail Link’s second environmental impact statement at their meeting last week.

A council spokeswoman said renaming the station The Sydney Hills would promote the area as a destination for businesses and tourism.

Councillor Yvonne Keane, who moved the motion for the name change, said it was part of an overall strategy to rebrand the area The Sydney Hills.
