Tayla Black has become Hills District Athletics Club’s youngest national champion after winning her first gold medal at the Primary Schools Sport Association (PSSA) championships last month.
The Winston Hills resident and Our Lady of Lourdes pupil threw 12.10 metres to edge out her nearest rival by 50cm to lift the under 12s junior title in Adelaide.
Battling an injured shoulder Tayla overcame the pain barrier with limited preparation time to break the 12 metre barrier for the second time this year.
‘‘Most kids her age can’t throw 12 metres so I knew even with an injured shoulder Tayla would be competitive,’’ coach and Hills District Athletics Club president Hank Huston said.
Tayla injured her shoulder at the PSSA state championships in October where set a new personal best mark of 12.32 metres to win gold.
