Appeal for tow truck driver who recorded a youth lighting a Winston Hills fire to come forward

Police are appealing for a tow truck driver who allegedly filmed a youth deliberately lighting a scrub fire in Winston Hills yesterday to come forward.

Police said emergency services were called to a traffic island on the corner of Old Windsor Road and Caroline Chisholm Drive about 4pm  yesterday.

Grass and trees covering an area about 30 metres by 20 metres was on fire.

Police said a tow truck driver approached Fire and Rescue NSW officers as they were working on the fire and said he used his smartphone to video a male child light the fire before running towards Old Windsor Road.

The witness left the scene, telling Fire and Rescue NSW officers that he would be reporting the incident to police.

Police are keen to speak with driver of the tow truck and view the footage.

They are urging him, or anyone else who can assist with inquiries into this fire, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Strike Force Tronto continues to co-ordinate the investigative response to deliberately-lit bushfires, with detectives from Property Crime Squad’s Arson Unit working closely with local police.

Police urge the community to assist them by reporting any suspicious behaviour.
