Showgirl bows out of competition

Kate Leckie’s dream of becoming Sydney Royal Show Miss Showgirl 2013 ended on Saturday.

Judges of the Zone 2 final of the competition chose Lauren McKay (representing Dapto Agricultural and Horticultural Society Inc) and Sally Ormiston (Frenchs Forest Agricultural and Horticultural Society Inc) to progress to The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition, to be held at the Royal Easter Show.

The last Castle Hill winner was Penelope Smith in 1994.

‘‘I thought Ms Dapto was very impressive,’’ Ms Leckie, who is the Castle Hill Showgirl 2013, said.

Ms Leckie, 23, was one of 15 contestants representing Zone 2 in the competition.

She represented the Castle Hill and Hills District Agricultural Society.

‘‘Ms Dapto has a pharmacy degree and is doing her medical degree in surgery at Wollongong,’’ Ms Leckie, of Kenthurst, said.

‘‘She spoke about how she’d like to go and work in Broken Hill.’’

Contestants had three opportunities on Saturday to impress the judges, including at a formal dinner at Crowne Plaza Norwest.

Contestants were judged on personality, confidence, ambition and life goals, general knowledge, rural knowledge, presentation and speech.

Finalists must also demonstrate knowledge of their local community and current affairs.

In addition to their potential ambassadorial qualities, contestants are also judged on their involvement in and experience of rural affairs.

‘‘It was a tough competition,’’ said Hills mayor Michelle Byrne, who was among the guests on the night.

‘‘Kate did an amazing job and spoke so well.’’

Said Ms Leckie: ‘‘I went in confident and I think I did well for someone my age and was extremely pleased with how I spoke on the night.

‘‘Now it’s time to get on with promoting the [Castle Hill] Show, which will be bigger and better than ever.’’

Asked about the event she most looked forward to, she said she had a particular fondness for the children’s events.

‘‘I really quite like the schools’ agriculture and seeing the school kids with the cattle,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s something I really enjoy.’’
