Local boys to play support for One Direction tour

Western Sydney band 5 Seconds of Summer has been handpicked by ‘‘it’’ boy band, One Direction, to open for them on their 1D tour around the globe.

The local band will be the main support act across all the UK, USA, Canada, Australian and New Zealand tour dates.

Drummer Ashton Irwin said supporting 1D was going to be amazing. ‘‘We still can’t believe how far we have come since playing our first show at the Annandale a year ago,’’ he said.

‘‘We love our fans that have continually supported us and can’t thank them enough for getting us to where we are today.”

The band formed in 2011 when Luke Hemmings, 16, began posting videos of himself on YouTube doing covers of popular songs.

Michael Clifford, 17, and Calum Hood, 16, soon joined their friend in his online performance.

They were then offered a gig at the Annandale Hotel and they found their drummer, Ashton Irwin, 18, via Facebook just a week before the show.

By June, the band was booked for its first tour which had sold out within two nights in three capitals.

In December, the boys packed their bags and moved to London to work on their debut album with well-established songwriters including band members from McFly, Steve Robson and Jamie Scott.

They have also clocked more than three million views on YouTube and more than 59,000 fans on Facebook.
