Minister: We can't save the Hills Centre

‘‘We can’t save The Hills Centre.’’

These were the words of Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian at a press conference at Castle Hill’s North West Rail Link information centre on Friday.

This will likely upset the 152 people who have joined the ‘‘Save The Hills Centre from demolition’’ Cause page on Facebook since January.

Its creator, Julie Rourke, said: ‘‘There is nowhere else this size available to community groups anywhere in greater Sydney.’’

To preserve the Castle Hill Showground, the proposed Showground Station site was located to the land adjacent to and including The Hills Centre in the second Environmental Impact Statement.

‘‘The Hills Centre and adjoining offices should be left intact and, after construction, sold to, or managed by, a community organisation to continue its use as a performing arts venue,’’ the Cause page states.

Ms Rourke also collected about 400 signatures of people wanting to save The Hills Centre.

Ms Berejiklian said the rail link project team was working with The Hills Council to find alternate venues for groups who use the council-owned centre.

A council spokeswoman said the conversation formed part of a council review of performing arts in The Hills.

Is there another building in The Hills  that could replace The Hills Centre? What do you think?
