Arts low on priority list

Last week The Hills Council promised a review of performing arts in The Hills in 2014.

Now the mayor Dr Michelle Byrne says "a regional solution may be the best option to support performing arts in the Hills".

"We will soon be considering a number of options to support performing arts in the Hills and a major regional precinct like the [Parramatta] Riverside Theatres could assist in providing solutions," Cr Byrne said.

Cr Byrne said she would meet with Parramatta lord mayor John Chedid this week to discuss Parramatta Council's master plan.

It contains details of a multimillion-dollar upgrade of the Riverside Theatres, including increased seating capacity.

The subject was debated on the News's Facebook page: "I'm sure residents will watch with keen interest to see when, and where, The Hills' equivalent of Parramatta's Riverside Theatres or Penrith's Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre is built."

In response, The Hills deputy mayor Andrew Jefferies said: "Our community values infrastructure such as children's playgrounds, footpaths, cycleways and community centres ahead of performing arts facilities."

The Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian had just confirmed The Hills Centre would be demolished to make way for the proposed Showground Station.
