THE Hills is a step closer to getting its own version of a Roman colosseum after the council awarded a tender to Auscorp Corporations to build an amphitheatre outdoor stage at Bella Vista Farm Park.
‘‘The outdoor stage will help accommodate some of the performances that were held at The Hills Centre and enhance existing Bella Vista Farm Park events,’’ mayor Michelle Byrne said. “This is a win for the performing arts community, a win for Bella Vista Farm Park and a win for residents who will have more opportunities to experience live performances in the Sydney Hills.’’
She said the stage would be covered and seating arrangements were being investigated.
Councillor Yvonne Keane said 47 per cent of residents had participated in the arts, as audience members or as part of a production, in 2005.
“I’m assured this is a growth area for The Hills [and] look forward to seeing many wonderful performing arts events here,’’ Cr Keane said.
A council officer told councillors the stage would be built over five months, subject to council heritage approval, and works would not interfere with scheduled events at the park.
Cr Byrne said the council would study the best solution for performing arts in the Hills this financial year.
