This weekend is a chance to run for the club that brought us two-time 400-metre world champion Jana Pittman, The Hills Athletic Club.
The club is hosting its annual The Hills Fun Run on Sunday, September 29, within the bushy Fred Caterson Reserve at Castle Hill.
It is an Orange Blossom Festival event.
‘‘The first was 40 years ago,’’ said the club’s middle- and long-distance coach Steve Whelan who will fire the starting gun for all three events on the day.
He said the event experienced a break of 10 to 15 years before being resumed by the club, which felt there was a ‘‘shortage of these types of events in The Hills’’.
‘‘In its current format it’s probably about eight years old,’’ he said. ‘‘The money goes to the athletics club to help us to continue to provide coaching and opportunities for athletes in The Hills area.’’
There are three events:
■ 4 kilometres run, starting at 8.30am;
■ 8 kilometres run, starting at 9am; and
■ 2 kilometres run, for primary schoolers, starting at 9.45am.
The course is traffic-free.
‘‘There’s one hill which is a bit challenging but apart from that it’s not a hard course,’’ Mr Whelan said.
Last year the club raised about $1200 through the event.
Registrations close on Saturday, September28, at 8am.
