EVERY year Playdays Preschool at West Pennant Hills celebrates the 12 Days of Christmas.
This year's activity on the fourth day — "Four calling birds" — was baking mince pies.
This year, parent Cecilia Paviour-Smith and her daughter Tahlia came up with the idea to donate the mince pies to the Parramatta Chamber of Commerce for its annual Christmas lunch for the homeless on December 12.
Ms Paviour-Smith is a member of the chamber.
Playdays director and educational co-ordinator Kirsty Newbury said the centre had a lot of working families and the 12 Days program gave families the opportunity to get together as a community.
"I leaped at the idea of baking mince pies for the Christmas lunch," Ms Newbury said.
"This year baking was extra special because of this special occasion and we were very happy to teach the children the gift of giving to the less fortunate.
Louise Zajac, the office manager at Parramatta Chamber of Commerce, said about 250 people attended the chamber's Christmas lunch.
"Mince pie making was a fun event for all last year and if the kids can learn a little about helping people in need as a side effect of a fun activity I think it would be great."
