Student leaders: Mount St Benedict College

Jessica Smith, College Captain

1. What is unique about your school?

Mount St Benedict College is unique in its spirit. More than anything, I love the community feel and the complete and utter sense that you are wholeheartedly supported. There is an enthusiasm that is contagious, and I really believe that we have the opportunity to have a holistic education, and all the girls are so keen to get involved in all aspects of the college, and to support us as captains.

2. Why do you think being a school leader is important?

I think being a school leader is important not to be the ‘big honcho’ that everyone sees every now and then, but to be someone who supports and works with the community. I think it’s important for girls these days to have good role models, and as a leader that’s something I try my absolute best to be.

1. What is unique about your school?

I’ve found that Mount St Benedict College provides an extensive range of opportunities for students, to allow everyone to have a chance to discover their talent and passion. It ensures that students whose talents lie outside the classroom environment can excel and be celebrated.

I’ve found that this really has contributed to the school spirit- students are accepting and enthusiastic and their individuality is celebrated.

2. Why do you think being a school leader is important?

School leadership is important because it gives the students an effective and positive way to have their opinions and ideas heard. It definitely isn’t about dictating our vision on the school community. It has been about listening to the school community and working towards a vision that is shared across the year groups.

I think that is why being a school leader is so important- we are given an opportunity to work for and with the students across year groups, to make a positive impact on the school that will benefit the community. In this sense, the students become active participants in the school, and a moving force for change.

1. What is unique about your school?

I think the positive atmosphere at Mount St Benedict College is something incredibly unique and special to our school; there is a strong sense of community rather than simply a sense of institution. The amount of spirit and dedication from the students is highly commendable and has set the moral foundations that the school continues to live on today.

2. Why do you think being a school leader is important?

Like many communities, I think schools need leaders to help the people within it set goals and instill the confidence and determination they need to achieve them. Every school has strength, a vision and a direction; leaders help to carve out this path and accelerate the school towards achieving these motives.
