CALLUM Trewothan has been swimming for many years with the Abbotsleigh club.
Nothing exceptional there.
He's a year 8 Galston High School student, who is among countless other 13-year-olds who have been training for years with swimming clubs.
But he has just done something exceptional.
He had a grandfather who always loved the open water, so an old friend and coach encouraged him to give it a go, too.
Callum started training at Forster Lakes and the next stroke was to enter the NSW open-water championships, where he excelled, winning a gold medal.
That earned him a qualifying time for the Australian titles in Victoria, where he competed against champions from around Australia over the gruelling 5km.
He was up for the physical and mental challenge and finished sixth, the probable start of many aquatic challenges ahead.
