Hills Relay for Life: Where spirit and hope shine

VOLUNTEERS behind The Hills Relay for Life are counting on community support to reach their goal of raising $350,000 for cancer research, education and support programs.

Castle Hill resident Ingrid Helff has participated in the event since 2008 and this year her team '200km Cancer Walk' is $1300 short of reaching a total of $50,000 raised in the last six years.

The 26 team members are hoping to walk a combined 200 km during the overnight event on Saturday, May 3.

"This is a fantastic fundraising event that gives you so much more than you can expect," Ms Helff said.

"For me it has been a life-changing experience."

In 2010 Ms Helff, 45, walked 200 km from Bathurst to Castle Hill with team member Jason Francis and raised $25,000.

This year the event has a more personal meaning for her with sister-in-law Tracy Williamson being diagnosed with stage four breast cancer that metasticised to her skull, spine and pelvis.

"Last year she was raising funds for cancer and now she is going through it all," Ms Helff said.
