Hornsby Council’s growing achievement

Hornsby Council’s Community Nursery has been named one of the best in Australia by the Nursery and Garden Industry Australia — the country’s nursery industry peak body.

Mayor Steve Russell said the council’s nursery placed in the finals of the award for Best Government Nursery, making it one of the four best of its kind.

‘‘This is a very big deal, following closely on the heels of the community nursery being named the best in NSW and the ACT,’’ Cr Russell said.

He said it was the only council nursery in NSW to hold NIASA (Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia) accreditation.

NIASA is a national scheme for production nursery (growers) and growing-media (potting mix) businesses which operates according to a set of national best management practice guidelines.

In 2013, Hornsby’s nursery volunteers contributed more than 2700 hours of service, helping produce more than 52,000 plants.

The nursery has given away more than 18,000 free native plants to Hornsby shire residents in the past three years.
