The flash floods which wrecked the Solomon Islands capital of Honiara last week have hit close to home for some in The Hills community.
Students from the Solomon Islands attend William Clarke College, Kellyville, through a scholarship program established with two primary schools in Honiara after a visit to the island nation’s tsunami-wrecked western province in 2007.
About 9,000 people are homeless and 23 people have died in the recent floods.
‘‘The College has a number of students both present and past and a number of staff who are from Honiara,’’ deputy headmaster Scott Marsh said.
‘‘As a close knit community, this week we have worked to ensure that these staff and students are supported.
‘‘Through working with our counselling staff and making contact with all our home-stay families, it has been important for us to ensure that the students have been in contact with their family and friends back home in the Solomon’s.’’
