GALLERY: The Hills Relay for Life raises $233,000

If the amount raised at this year's Hills Relay for Life isn't amazing enough — $233,000 and counting — add to that the predictions illusionist Jack Daniels put in a sealed box on April 10 all ended up correct.

"Everyone was blown away," said Dave Powers, the event co-chairman with an equally gobsmacked The Hills mayor Michelle Byrne who said, "I don't know how he does it".

"He guessed the exact number of participants [104 teams, 1027 individuals] and what someone was wearing in the opening lap — a red coat, a purple hat and purple sash for survivor, blue jeans and black shoes," Mr Power said.

Cr Byrne said: "He also predicted how many heads would be shaved, including one of the girls who would shave her head, and age. She hadn't even decided to do this in April."

This year's Hills Relay For Life was the 13th held in The Hills.

Last year's fund-raising effort saw the total amount raised over the years top $2.5 million.

"It's [this year's amount] still rising because people will still be banking over the next month, but at last count it was $232,952.20," Mr Power said this morning (Monday).

"It was certainly a great event and very successful, and the rain luckily was only between midnight and 4am (Sunday)."

On Saturday night, about 400 candles were also lit in memory of those who had died from cancer.
