Hornsby Council chosen for Future Cities program

Hornsby Council has been selected into the Future Cities Program with five other NSW councils.

“This gives us access to some of the best minds in the world in the field of planning and infrastructure,’’ Mayor Steve Russell said.

To be selected, council had to nominate a single project.

They chose the revitalisation of Hornsby’s west side.

The program is a partnership between the United States Study Centre, the University of Sydney and the NSW government.

“The councils are chosen on the quality of their leadership and the quality of their project,” Professor Edward Blakely of the United States Study Centre said.

“Hornsby Council’s project is in keeping with the theme this year, which is revitalisation.”

Also chosen were Canada Bay, Gosford, Marrickville, Pittwater and Wollongong councils.

Council representatives will attend a three-day workshop at the University of Sydney and a study tour in New York.

They will also be assigned a post-graduate student from the University of Sydney faculty of architecture, design and planning to work with them throughout the program.
