Wet, cyclists damage Hornsby Council mountain bike trail

The opening of the new stage of Hornsby Council’s mountain bike trail has been delayed due to wet weather and damage caused by riders ignoring the closure signs.

It may take several weeks to repair.

“If this continues we will need to look at other options, including lining trail sections with rock armour,’’ mayor Steve Russell warned.

Ironically, the worst damage occurred in an area that had just been resurfaced to be more durable, at a cost of several thousand dollars.

The trail was closed while that section dried and settled, but some riders removed the signs and barriers.

“It’s only a small percentage who are being selfish by riding the trail when it is closed but the damage they cause is significant,’’ Cr Russell said.
