The Hills Council has resolved to amend its development control plan to exempt trees under six metres and within three metres of an approved dwelling or structure from requiring development consent for removal.

The DCP will be exhibited and a report prepared.

The council has added 15 species to the exemption list and nine trees under 10 metres.

Mayor Michelle Byrne said just over 70per cent of applications for tree removal are approved annually.

She said the amendments would cut red tape and take into account extenuating circumstances, including aged, frail and disabled residents who have trouble maintaining trees.

The changes were not about reducing the numbers of trees in The Hills, she said.
