Kellyville Public's hens turn two

Kellyville Public School’s feathered friends didn’t go unnoticed by staff and pupils on their second birthday.

Pupils sang happy birthday to Mrs Omelette, Mrs Bunnings and Lady Von Peck and served them a cake made with carrots and snow pea sprouts by the school’s environment co-ordinator Jenny Heffernan on Monday.

The hens are a much-loved learning resource for pupils involved in Kellyville Enviro Kids, a group of about 20 pupils who help with garden-based activities that teach them and their peers about biodiversity, sustainability and the environment.

They feed the hens at lunch time and collect their eggs, which go to the school canteen to make sandwiches and muffins.

Canteen scraps are returned to the coop and worm farms to make fertiliser that is used on the garden.
