A North Rocks man has been charged with grievous bodily harm after a boy was critically injured on Wednesday.
The two-year-old child was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital with severe head and body injuries.
His condition has since been described as critical but stable.
Detectives from the child abuse squad investigated and arrested a man, 39, and woman, 24, on Friday.
They later charged the man with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He appeared in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday and will appear again on Wednesday.
The woman was released without charge.
The child abuse squad comprises detectives specially trained to investigate crimes against children, including sexual assault, physical abuse and serious cases of neglect.
The squad works in partnership with the Department of Family and Community Services and NSW Health.
