School Holidays: Get creative with mosaics

FROM the Byzantine empire to Castle Hill: the art of smalti mosaic comes to the Powerhouse Discovery Centre this week.

On Thursday and Friday, kids can enjoy Mosaic Mania: a family-friendly workshop that teaches kids five and over to create a mosaic paving stone to take home.

Adults can also enjoy a five week course from August 1 run by Blue Mountains mosaic artist, Caitlin Hughes and mosaic business owner Robyn Westall.

"There are very few opportunities for mosaicists to have this skill, come together and with great facilities and at a very good price," Ms Westall said. "It's a rare opportunity."

Smalti tiles are opaque glass tiles and can be seen in the large scale panel, 'The Maid of Abundance' now on display at the discovery centre.

With 30 years experience with mosaics, Ms Westall was awarded the prestigious Creative Tiling magazine's 'Creative Tiling Award' in 2003 for a water feature.
