A new pub in Bella Vista has been granted extended trading hours despite strong police opposition.
The Bella Vista Hotel in Norwest Business Park sought to extend trading hours from midnight on Monday to Saturday to 3am, in accordance with other licensed premises in the area.
Police strongly opposed the extension saying, in a letter to the council, it could increase the risk of violence and anti-social behaviour in the area.
They said there had been numerous alcohol-related incidents in the area, including assault and robbery.
Norwest Association, Norwest Business park’s body corporate, and council officers also opposed the extension.
But councillors rejected the proposed 1am closing time and voted to extend trading hours until 3am.
Councillor Ray Harty said the applicant was entitled to operate on a level playing field with other hotels in the area, which are open until 3am.
Councillors Barbara Burton, Michelle Byrne and Larry Bolitho opposed the extended trading hours.
