BE inspired to try your hand at bowls with a free "taster" day at Castle Hill Bowling Club.

The club is looking to get more people playing the sport at the venue.

To help boost the sport's profile the club is holding an open day on Sunday, August 24, from 10am to 4pm.

The day will include free bowls lessons, a sausage sizzle and prizes.

"We want to try and entice new members, whether they be for social bowls or full bowling members, with the emphasis is on having fun and learning how to bowl," said Kevin Henry, chairman of the open day committee.

"We emphasise bowls is for all ages — even the school opposite has been invited."

Mr Henry said there were many benefits to playing bowls.

"Getting out in the sun," he said.

"Normally when you play it's the camaraderie.

"You normally have a drink and eat together. You get to meet people.

"If it's an older person, who may be lonely, they will have the chance to meet new people.

"For younger ones, it is the experience to learn from the older members."

The club has more than 250 bowling members aged from their 20s to mid-80s.

Mr Henry said the club's main aim was to have "fun".
