CASTLE Hill RSL Club has agreed to sponsor and train Mitchell Hayes for the epic 96km journey across the Kokoda Track which starts on September 24.
Hayes said he's always wanted to do the Kokoda Track as it's a place of national significance for Australians.
"Kokoda is one of the hardest and most rugged treks in the world," Hayes said. "It's also a place where Australia showed its courage and determination in fending off the Japanese."
Hayes said the youth leadership tour will give him and others a better understanding of what Australian soldiers had to endure during World War II.
The keen hiker said he plans to enjoy the challenge but described it as the most difficult trek he's ever undertaken.
Castle Hill RSL president Warren Glenny said Mitchell was picked for showing great enthusiasm for the Youth Leadership Challenge.
