Llamas wrapped up for frosty spring in Canberra

Ms Bluhm said the llama's on her Alpaca Magic property near Sutton were chilled to the bone as temperatures slipped to zero on Wednesday night.

As she crocheted with a friend at home on Thursday, she said bubble wrap is an emergency measure llama farmers have up their sleeve to fight the frost.

"The animals were shorn on last Friday so they havent got any clothes on. If you are used to wearing your winter coat and you were just running around in your underwear you'd find it pretty damn cold too," Ms Bluhm said.

"The first thing you do when an animal is cold is you stuff them full of food to warm them up and then you find them a place out of the weather."

"Some of them were still cold, so those ones I wrapped up," she said.

Ms Bluhm, who has 120 llama and 80 alpacas on the property, said the only other time she wrapped them in bubble wrap was when they were sick and did not move much which "can be a recipe for disaster".

She said she had spoken to one of the other region's llama farmers who also reported their animals were cold.

There were about 20 other properties in the Canberra region with llamas, according to Ms Bluhm who is also the secretary of the NSW/ACT Llama Association of Australasia.

Vice president of the association, 22-year old Mark Ayyad, said temperatures had not dropped low enough to get out the bubblewrap on his farm at Tarlo outside of Goulburn.

He said that despite sheering them last week, his llamas had been just warm enough in their shelter in the rain earlier this week.

Mr Ayyad said he had to bring "them into the shed closer to the house to get them away from the wind" earlier in the winter.

Mr Ayyad had initially wanted to breed Alpacas, but "fell in love" with llamas on a visit to a farm near Canberra last year.

"They are so much more affectionate and so I have started breeding them and one of them is due [to give birth] at the end of the year or in January," he said.
