Two men are fighting for life after a ute carrying six people hit a power pole and rolled in the state's north-east.
High speed and alcohol are being investigated as causes of the crash at Buffalo River on Friday.
Police say the vehicle was travelling in Buffalo River Road near Myrtleford when the driver lost control and crashed just after 11pm.
All six people on board, who live locally and are aged between 18 and 21 years old, were inside the cabin of the dual-cab ute when it crashed.
Police say the driver, aged 20, blew over the legal alcohol limit in a preliminary breath test. They are awaiting the results of a blood test to determine his blood alcohol content.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said two men, both aged 20, were flown to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.
"One has got a head injury. Another one with a chest injury," he said.
"Two others have been taken to Wangaratta base hospital and they're serious but stable."
A spokeswoman for The Alfred said the two men remained in a critical condition on Saturday morning.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the cause of the crash.
Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said high-end excessive speed and alcohol were being investigated as causes.
"We have two young men fighting for their lives and another two with serious injuries," he said.
"It's a terrible crash and it's a tragedy that will have a major ripple effect through the local community."
