India remains unwavering in their stubborn resistance to the use of the Decision Review System but believe they are on the wrong end of several 50-50 umpiring calls this series.
The Indians are also unhappy with the standard of the umpiring after losing the second Test by four wickets to slump to a 2-0 deficit heading into the Boxing Day Test next week.
India captain M.S. Dhoni has good reason to be disappointed with the umpires' performances in Brisbane but his board's refusal to use DRS makes it hard for fans to offer sympathy.
The Indians received two howlers in Brisbane, both of which would have been overturned had the use of technology been allowed.
Their No.3 batsman, Cheteshwar Pujara, could barely hide his exasperation when fired out caught behind on the first day despite the ball clearly hitting the grille of his helmet instead of his bat.
The tinny sound of ball hitting the grille was audible on the telecast but not to umpire Ian Gould.
Ravi Ashwin, a handy lower-order batsman, was given out caught behind though replays showed the ball flicking his thigh. There was no HotSpot mark on the inside edge.
Although Dhoni had sympathy for the umpires, who had to officiate in the at times stifling heat and humidity, he said they needed to lift their game.
"It can certainly improve but it's very tough for those two individuals," Dhoni said.
"To stand there for five days continuously, apart from lunch and tea, they don't really get any breaks. When we are batting they are still on the field; when Australia's batting they are still on the field.
"It is tough on them but I always tell them try to be consistent throughout the Test match."
Dhoni feels his team is not getting the rub of the green with the line-ball decisions, which cannot be overturned by DRS.
Under DRS, marginal calls stay with the umpires' original verdict, which means paradoxically there can be two outcomes for the one ball.
"It's a very interesting question but what's more important is there are a lot of 50-50 decisions that are not going in our favour," Dhoni said.
"We are on the receiving end more often than not. What happens in DRS, even if DRS is around, those decisions won't go in our favour because if the umpire has given out and you take a DRS it's still out.
"DRS is often used to justify the decision given by the umpire. What's important is to use DRS as a way of giving the right decision irrespective of if the umpire's given it out or not out.
"There are a lot of ways to use DRS but this is something that needs to be put in a specific way. It doesn't matter if the umpire's given out or not out. If the ball hits the stumps you are out, or if half the ball hits you are out. Then you are adding too many variables in the game."
India's initial reason for not using DRS stemmed from Sachin Tendulkar's and Dhoni's opposition but the International Cricket Council said recently that the Board of Control for Cricket in India believed the system also questioned the umpires' authority.
