Two young hearts move to Canberra, find one another and fall in love.
Its the story of many ACT couples, but keepers at the National Zoo and Aquarium hope the arrival of Shaba the three-and-a-half-year-old male Giraffe from Mogo Zoo will spark the interest of four-year-old female Mzungu.
Mzungu settled in quickly after she travelled to Canberra from Dubbo's Western Plains Zoo to Canberra as part of the regional breeding program and National Zoo and Aquarium senior wildlife keeper Renee Osterloh expected Mzungu's potential new boyfriend Shaba would do the same.
"They will first see each other this afternoon," she said. "Over the next couple of days they will be getting to know each other so that will be very cute to watch."
Giraffe can be prone to anxiety, but Ms Osterloh said from all reports Shaba enjoyed the slow winding journey and was spotted by many spectators on his way to Canberra.
"He has had a good trip," she said. "He's been quite inquisitive sticking his head out and really watching what's going on with the move."
Shaba is the first bull the National Zoo and Aquarium has received since 2004.
Both animals have come from living among large family groups at their respective zoos and keepers are thrilled to see how Mzungu received a new friend in her enclosure.
"They are a social animal so its healthy to have them together in a social situation," Ms Osterloh said. "The key thing is making sure they are both happy together and stress free and that will bode well for the breeding program."
It has been planned for at least two years that these two giraffe would be paired, but it may be several more years wait before the duo get together to mate.
"They are quite young," Ms Osterloh said. "We hope they will become close, hang out and get to know each other and once they hit sexual maturity in a couple of years we will start to see the success of the breeding program."
