Former Tara Anglican Girls School student Simone Kennedy added to the Australian medal count of nine at the London Paralympics overnight with a silver medal in the women’s C1-2-3 individual pursuit.
Kennedy, the reigning world champion, entered the event as one of the pre-race favourites and didn’t disappoint by reaching the gold medal race-off against China’s Zeng Sini.
The 18-year-old, Parramatta Cycling Club member, went out hard in the early stages but failed to hold off her tactical opponent who finished four seconds in front of her and set a new world record during qualifying.
Kennedy’s silver medal ride of 4:24.893 was more than one second slower than her fastest qualifying time of 4:23.450.
Cycling teammate Jayme Paris finished eighth in the 3km pursuit after setting a new world record time during qualifying.
Paris, of Quakers Hill, bettered her Beijing Paralympics time but still missed out on a medal having set a C1 world record time of 4:40.123 during qualifying.
Both Paris and Kennedy compete tomorrow in the C1-3 500m time trial.
Paris is a medal contender having won the bronze in Beijing.
