HORNSBY Council has invested $750,000 in upgrades to Cherrybrook's Greenway Park in the past four years.
Outgoing Labor councillor Bruce Mills, a keen advocate of the project, said the overdue investment would benefit several sporting groups.
"Sporting groups have been waiting for this upgrade for nearly 10 years" Cr Mills said.
"By building up the soil, installing new irrigation and resurfacing, council will significantly improve the quality and durability of this popular sportsground."
The main athletics oval will be rebuilt from October at a cost of $400,000. It is expected most of the work will be completed by Christmas.
Existing users have been relocated, as the new surface will not properly be established until the beginning of the winter sports season in April.
Another $340,000 has been set aside for design and construction of an expanded skate park, expected to be completed in September 2013.
Cr Mills said the existing skate park, though well used, did not have modern features.
