THINGS may be starting to look gloomy in the garden, but now is the time to plan for a colourful spring display.
Yes, it's bulb planting time.
So what's what in the plot when it comes to bulbs?
Freesias smell sweet and look gorgeous.
They like a sunny spot and plenty of room to spread.
Like many bulbs, once they're in the ground they'll just keep coming back year after year.
Crocus are best suited to cooler areas, but can also thrive in warm areas if planted under trees.
Bright and cheery ranunculus like full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.
Got a deciduous tree that looks a bit sad before it greens up for the summer?
Try popping some bluebells around the base and make that dull area pop with early colour.
Then there's that timeless favourite, the daffodil.
They do well in half to full sun with good drainage and look best when planted in clumps and masses.
Don't forget daffodil's fragrant little cousin, the jonquil, which grows well in all areas of Sydney.
When choosing bulbs, look for those that are firm and heavy.
Remember to plant them twice as deep as their width and make a statement by creating large drifts or clumps.
