The UK will elect its new representatives and ruling party in the coming hours. This is how election day and its aftermath will unfold.
Thursday, May 7
7am (4pm Australian eastern): Polls open. Political comment banned in all British media. Party leaders vote early.
10pm (7am Friday): Polls close.
10.10pm: Exit polls released. First indication of how the night will go.
11pm (8am Friday): First result due: Houghton & Sunderland (a safe Labour seat).
Friday, May 8
1am (10am): First significant set of results.
2am (11am): Big surge of results from across the country. First results from Scotland come through.
4.45am (1.45pm): Liberal Democrat leader and Deputy PM Nick Clegg discovers if he's held his seat.
6am (3pm): UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage discovers if he has won South Thanet – if he doesn't, he may quit politics.
7am (4pm): Last big haul of results.
Noon (9am): Six remaining results due (1 likely Conservative gain, 2 safe Labour, 3 safe Conservative)
1pm (10am): Final result should be from St Ives in Cornwall, south-west England (a likely Liberal Democrat hold).
Monday, May 18
MPs sworn in to parliament.
Wednesday, May 27
Queen's Speech, at the state opening of Parliament. Over the following days, Parliament debates the speech.
First week of June
Vote on the Queen's Speech - and possible vote of no confidence.
July
New election if necessary.
