Roger Federer's problems at the French Open were played out on centre court at Roland Garros.
Federer's Davis Cup teammate Stan Wawrinka's objection covered very different ground. He did not see the Federer incident, as he was busy with the later stages of his equally smooth 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Marsel Ilhan in 96 minutes, but he certainly did see the extraordinary article on the French Open's website on Saturday, in which the author spent the best part of 500 words discussing the break-up of Wawrinka's marriage then mentioned the "news/rumour/hearsay/guesswork" linking Wawrinka to the 18-year-old Croatian player Donna Vekic.
"I don't think it was great for the tournament to do that s*** article," said Wawrinka, 30. "It's the official website of a grand slam, so I hope the guy who did that article is not a journalist. I also hope the guy who is supposed to check all the articles on the website is not working anymore for the tournament."
Details of Wawrinka's love life have been drawn into the public domain after his ex-wife Ilham released a sharply critical statement arguing that his troubles at home should not be used as an excuse for poor results on the court.
"No, trips and tournaments are not the cause of our separation," she said in April. "The repeated fibs and emotional betrayals eventually destroyed entirely the confidence I had in him."
Meanwhile, Federer finished his press conference at Roland Garros by taking a swipe at Wimbledon's clothing policy. Asked about his colourful combination of a purple shirt with hot pink shorts, he replied: "I went through a bright spell the first few months of the season. Obviously it's going to change when Wimbledon comes around because rules have become ridiculously strict over there. I love Wimbledon, but they have gone too far now."
