Ratings win for 3AW as ABC slides

MELBOURNE talk radio giant 3AW has enjoyed another emphatic victory against arch-rival 774 ABC Melbourne in the latest ratings survey. The station, owned by Fairfax Media, scored a 16.2 per cent market share, significantly up from last month's 15 per cent. ABC 774 lost some ground at the same time, falling to 10.8 per cent from 11.3 per cent.

3AW's giant-killing breakfast team Ross and John had an extraordinary win, taking a colossal 21.6 per cent market share, up from last month's 19.1 per cent. The next best was Red Symons on ABC 774 with 13 per cent.

3AW station boss Shane Healy says the duo's stint in London through the Olympics certainly helped their figures.

"Their two weeks in London was some of the best radio heard in Australia," he says. "Overall, it's a bloody good result for us."

Veteran broadcaster Neil Mitchell again won his battle for the morning slot against his chief adversary at the ABC, Jon Faine, scoring an 18.6 per cent share which was up from 18.1 per cent. Faine moved slightly down from 13.5 per cent to 13.1 per cent.

On the FM dial, rising pop station Nova 100 had another strong survey, scaling up to 7.9 per cent from 7.3 per cent. Hughesy and Kate's breakfast show is again up getting a 7.7 per cent share, which is now almost the top-rating program in the 18-39 demographic.

"We're up solidly in every single shift at Nova," said DMG Radio general manager Helen Davies. "It's a very solid survey."

At Triple M, ratings steadied at Eddie McGuire's Hot Breakfast show, after falling in the last survey. Hot Breakfast now sits at 6.8 per cent.

Guy Dobson from Southern Cross Austereo says the station is the top-rating in the 25-39 demographic.

"We can hear improvement in the show," he said. "We're expecting a bold showing from Fox in the next survey. It's a flat survey for them."

Gold 104.3's Brig and Lehmo show gained share, up to 6.1 per cent, but Mix 101.1, led by Chrissie Swan, lost audience share, falling to 5 per cent.

Elsewhere, national youth broadcaster Triple J increased its share from 4.4 per cent to 5.1 per cent.
