Jonathan Brown and Kevin Newman are so optimistic that same-sex marriage will soon be allowed in Australia that they have thrown out the plans they had in place for a civil ceremony.
"We were almost going to just have a ceremony, regardless of what the law is," Mr Brown said. "The fact that [same-sex marriage] is actually so close means we have scrapped those plans because we want to get married when it is legal and it means something. It is really exciting for us. "
Mr Brown said he and Mr Newman made the decision recently once "momentum started building" on the issue following decisions in Ireland and the United States to legalise same-sex marriage.
The pair had been planning the civil ceremony for November and now hope to get married instead in that month.
A cross-party bill on same-sex marriage is set to be introduced on August 11, and the Liberal Party will decide whether MPs should be able to have a conscience vote on the issue on August 18.
"It's really exciting that finally [same sex marriage] has got a good chance of actually happening in Australia," he said.
Mr Brown, a communications officer, said he and Mr Newman, the rescue co-ordinator at the Lost Dogs Home, were planning to get married or hold a civil ceremony in Adelaide.
But he said the venue may also change, as the two were approved for a loan to buy a house in Sunbury on Wednesday, and they are now thinking of holding the event in Melbourne.
"The house and marriage at the same time would be the perfect way to end our year," Mr Brown said.
